A common law relationship is defined as a couple who live together in a conjugal relationship, regardless of whether they are married or not.  Although common law relationships are not recognized by the government, they do have some legal implications. For example, if the relationship breaks down, your common law spouse may be entitled to half your assets as well as ongoing support payments. In addition, there may be tax implications for couples who enter into a common law relationship. For example, you may not be able to claim certain tax deductions if you are not married. Talk to us if you are considering entering into a common law relationship.

If you’re thinking about getting married, it’s important that both parties have an idea of what they want out their lives. We can help with this by creating agreements like cohabitation contracts which outline how two people would live as partners before any commitments are made public. It might seem difficult at first but these documents will make sure everything runs smoothly when things inevitably do not go according to plan.
